Enrol to vote

The Australian Electoral Commission accepts applications for electoral enrolment and maintains Commonwealth and State Electoral Rolls

It is necessary to fill in only one enrolment form to have your name added to the electoral roll to vote in federal, state and local government elections. You need to update your enrolment every time you move.

Voting in Commonwealth and State Government elections is compulsory.

The term of the Commonwealth Parliament is 3 years. It is usual for House of Representatives and half Senate elections to be held at the same time.

The term of a South Australian parliament is 4 years.

Voting in Local Government elections is not compulsory. Elections are held every 4 years.

To be eligible to vote in Local Government elections you must be registered on the Council's voters roll. Residents (including tenants) over the age of 18 who are on the State electoral roll and property owners or occupiers who pay Council rates are automatically enrolled on the Council's voters roll.
